Wig Care Guide — How to Wash & Store a Human Hair Wig

A human hair wig is an investment. With the right care routine, a quality unit can last 1–3 years (or longer for raw hair). Neglect it and even the best hair will dry out, tangle and shed prematurely. Here's exactly how to look after yours.

How Often Should You Wash Your Wig?

For everyday wearers, wash your wig every 7–10 days. If you wear it less frequently, every 2–3 weeks is fine. Over-washing strips natural moisture from the hair, so more isn't better.

What You'll Need

  • Sulphate-free shampoo
  • Moisturising conditioner (or deep conditioner for dry hair)
  • A wide-tooth comb
  • A wig stand or mannequin head
  • A microfibre towel
  • Cool or lukewarm water

Step-by-Step: How to Wash a Human Hair Wig

1. Detangle first

Before getting the hair wet, gently detangle from ends to roots using a wide-tooth comb. Never start at the root — this causes unnecessary breakage and shedding.

2. Rinse with cool water

Hold the wig under cool running water, letting it flow from root to tip in one direction. Avoid scrubbing or bunching the hair.

3. Shampoo gently

Apply a small amount of sulphate-free shampoo and work it through the hair in a downward motion — root to tip. Do not rub the hair in a circular motion. Rinse thoroughly.

4. Condition

Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, avoiding the roots and lace area (conditioner on the knots can loosen them over time). Leave for 3–5 minutes, then rinse well.

5. Pat dry — never rub

Gently press the hair between a microfibre towel to absorb excess water. Rubbing causes frizz and tangles.

6. Air dry on a wig stand

Place the wig on a stand and allow it to air dry naturally. Avoid blow-drying on high heat unless necessary — if you must use heat, apply a heat protectant first and use a low setting.

How to Store a Human Hair Wig

  • Wig stand: The best everyday storage option — keeps the shape intact and allows air circulation
  • Satin bag: Ideal for travel or long-term storage — reduces friction and moisture loss
  • Away from sunlight: UV exposure fades colour and dries out the hair over time
  • Away from heat: Don't store near radiators, direct sunlight or in a hot car

Extra Tips to Make Your Wig Last Longer

  • Sleep in a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase if you wear your wig overnight
  • Use a light leave-in conditioner or hair oil between washes to maintain moisture
  • Avoid excessive heat styling — the hair doesn't regenerate natural oils like hair growing from your scalp
  • Book a professional wash and style at EA HAIR every 4–6 weeks to keep the unit in top condition
